How Effective Are Breast Cancer Treatments?

Being a breast cancer specialist, I consult a lot of patients every week at our facility.

When a patient is diagnosed with breast cancer, the most common question they ask us is, “How effective are breast cancer treatments?”

In this blog, I have tried to address this question in detail. Let’s begin.

Effectiveness of breast cancer treatments?

Well, this question is quite broad, and one single answer is not possible for this.

For e.g.
A normal breast cancer patient who has undergone a successful surgery will say that breast cancer treatments are very effective. But a metastatic breast cancer patient will say the breast cancer treatment is not effective.

Today, there are multiple treatment options available for breast cancer. This includes surgery, Chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy and targeted therapy.

These treatments can prove effective where they are utilized in an evidence-based manner.

We can also say that the treatment factor is not enough to determine the effectiveness of the breast cancer treatment. The disease factor and the patient factor, too, play a crucial role.

For e.g.
It’s possible to cure a 40-year-old patient with Chemotherapy. But if the patient’s age is 70, the treatment using the same modality is not possible, even if the stage and form of the cancer are the same.

In short, the treatment modality and the outcome of the treatment vary greatly for each patient.

There are specific guidelines for allopathic treatments for treating different forms and stages of cancer.

E.g.
If the cancer is very aggressive, 8 chemotherapy sessions are required instead of 6. We provide Chemotherapy and radiation if the cancer is in a higher stage. If the tumour has ER/PR receptors, we use hormonal therapy.

If the tumour has HER-2/NEU receptors, we give targeted. Similarly, if cancer has reached the axiliary node, we know the risk of this cancer returning is high. So we give radiation along with Chemotherapy.

In short, breast cancer treatments can be very effective. But the effectiveness depends on the tumour factor, patient factor and treatment factor.
